VR Exhibition: Eco-Rotomoulding

A virtual reality exhibition showcasing a novel rotomoulding machine concept

Individual Project by Di Ba, 2020 | 5 min reading time

Overview

The virtual reality exhibition is a showcase of a new rotomoulding machine concept proposed by myself. The exhibition explains the advantages, principles and key components with three connecting VR rooms.

Rotomoulding is a common industrial process used for making hollow plastic shapes. The machine will first heat plastic grain which is put inside a mould. As soon as the plastic begins to melt, the machine will start to rotate the mould, so that the molten plastic can cover the inner surface of the mould. After sufficient heating, the rotating mould will slowly cool down in the air while waiting for the plastic to solidify.

My design concept introduced a heat-recovery system as an addition to the existing rotomoulding machine. It recovers heat from the cooling stage to a thermal tank and reuses it in the next heating cycle.

Rooms

The whole scene consists of three rooms.

Entry Room
The entry room is essentially a wide corridor, with four information boards briefly explaining the scene and some background knowledge.

Main Room
The main room explains how the new design looks, how it is different from the old one, and the working principles and a relevant simulation. This information is separated on other floors in the main room.

VR Room
The VR room includes an exploded view of the machine hovering in the centre of the room. The exploded view can be a good explanation of what the machine consists of and potentially an excellent aesthetic impression.
