VR Scene: Living Pillar Lampposts

A virtual reality programme displaying a "living pillar" lamppost design in different seasons and weather condition.

Individual Project by Di Ba, 2020 | 5 min reading time + 5 min video

Overview

Living Pillar is a new technological and service solution by Scotscape. It installs plants onto lampposts, aiming to improve biodiversity and visual appeal in city areas. There are already installations available in the UK (e.g. St John's Hill).

This project designed a series of Virtual Reality scenes showcasing a novel design proposal for living pillars - adding artificial lighting to make them more visually appealing.

The VR scenes were created aiming for high-fidelity and photorealistic graphics to create an immersive and convincing experience for visitors.

Features

I created five scenes to showcase how the design proposal can make living pillars more visually appealing in different seasons and weather conditions.

Scene #1: The Hub

A hub scene was created to aid the narratives and connect different locations. The hub consists of four connecting rooms. Here is also where our visitors (players) spawn.

Visitors spawn in the main room, where there are basic instructions and a model of the new design concept. Visitors can teleport across the room using controllers.

The other four rooms, walled with glass, are gates to other scenes with different weather and season settings. You can see more details in the following video tour.
